Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is an educational process aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of the rapidly changing, interdependent and unequal world in which we live. By challenging stereotypes and encouraging independent thinking, GCE helps students critically explore the root causes of global justice issues and how they interlink with our everyday lives.
GCE inspires global solidarity by supporting people to fully realise their rights, responsibilities and potential as global citizens in order to take meaningful action for a just and sustainable world
With support from World Wise Global Schools, funded by Irish Aid, our school have successfully embraced the teaching of Global Citizenship across many subject areas. We now have a Global Citizenship elective option in Transition Year (TY) and this allows students to become familiar with the Sustainable Development Goals and choose their own topics of interest to explore. Using these projects, TY’s then present their findings to the whole school community annually at a Global Citizenship Fair. Topics in the past have included Fast Fashion, Pink tax, Domestic Violence, LGBTQI, Prejudice and Racism, Climate Change, Mental Health and Language barriers to education along with exploring what Quality education is.
Scoil Chríost Rí has been awarded two Global Citizenship passport awards in the past for their work raising awareness about Global Issues. They have also taken part for 6 years in the YSI, Young Social Innovator’s Programme which also facilitates students to take on research and an action based on their own interests.
